From Varney's Sawmill to a Muse's Namesake
Theodore P. Dean built the first sawmill on the site in 1837, when the settlement was known as Varney. The 1861 completion of the Flint and Pere Marquette Railway drove the town's growth, and in 1866 residents renamed it Clio, after the Greek muse of history, ahead of its 1873 incorporation as a village.
